How to Fix Car Ignition Problems

The car won't start until the ignition switch is sending an electrical signal to the starter motor. Over time wear and tear could cause the switch to fail.

With the help of specialized tools, you are able to remove the steering column trim and gain access to the ignition cylinder module. Consult your repair manual for instructions on how to do this in a safe manner.

1. Make sure to check the Switch

A malfunctioning switch is one of the most frequently encountered ignition issues. It functions as bridge between two contacts, and controls when relays activate and deactivate. Because it isn't able to transmit the full power of devices like the starter, it's a lighter-duty component that is less likely to fail. However, it's still possible for the switch to be damaged or corroded.

A bad switch can be identified by a difficulty turning the key. This could be due to many factors that include not inserting the correct key correctly or wearing down the mechanism over time. It's not uncommon for people to confuse their keys with keys from someone else's. This can cause mechanical damage.

If the switch isn't working there are a few things you can try before calling a locksmith ignition replacement cost. First, you must ensure that the battery is fully charged and that there are no electrical issues in the system. It is also important to test the voltage of each component to determine if it's capable of supplying enough power. After you've completed the above steps, you can begin troubleshooting.

The ignition switch is easy to replace. It is connected to the ignition module, a round component that connects everything. You'll need to use a flathead and a piece of material long enough for you to push the pin into. You can use anything from a paintbrush, to a kabob stick, but avoid anything that is hard as it could break into the hole.

Remove any trimming pieces that cover the area around the switch when you are ready to go. After this take off and loosen any screws that are holding the switch in place, and then gently pull it out. Depending on the model, you may have to cut off any cables connected to it. If you have a manual for the vehicle you own and model, it will show you exactly how to do this.

If the ignition switch isn't working it's recommended to have it replaced by a professional. It's difficult to replace the ignition switch without removing the steering column. This could lead to the unintentional airbag deployment in the event that you don't do it correctly. For this reason, it's often best to have your locksmith take care of this for you.

2. Check the Wiring

Your car may not start if it is difficult to turn the key or it isn't starting. This could be due to any variety of components in the ignition system. It's crucial to understand how the ignition system functions so that you can pinpoint problems and make the right repairs.

The ignition switch is a low-voltage multi-pole electrical switch that is turned by the key. It has four positions, including "off", "accessory", "run" and the "lock". When the switch is in the lock position (which typically has a red indicator), the ignition circuit is active and it's impossible to start the engine.

You can use a voltmeter to quickly test the ignition switch or coil. The voltmeter should read approximately 12.6 volts when the ignition switch is in the running position. If the voltage is below that it indicates that there is an open circuit somewhere within the system. This could be at the solenoid, the battery or even the ignition coil itself.

Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition switch to ensure that no other components interfere with the test. Then, set the voltmeter to the continuity or resistance mode and put one lead on one of the ignition switch terminals. The other lead should go to the positive terminal of the battery. If the voltage gauge reads "open" or doesn't show any voltage, it's time to replace the switch.

Use a brand new ignition key and a high-quality ignition cylinder when you replace the switch to ensure that your vehicle is running and starts correctly. When replacing the switch, ensure not to touch the pins of the ignition cylinder using your tools. In the event of a collision, they'll get stuck and the engine won't be able to run. You'll need to take off the steering wheel and gear selector in some vehicles to access the ignition cylinder. This can be a challenge and isn't recommended until you have an owner’s manual that states it's safe. If you do not you could cause severe damage to your steering column and the shift mechanism.

3. Check the Cylinder

If you have tried the battery, the wiring, and the ignition switch but still cannot get your car to start It could be time to examine the cylinder. The cylinder is the part that holds the key. It is mechanically connected to the steering lock so that a would-be burglar can't drive the car if it's not there.

If your cylinder is beginning to wear out, you may notice that the key won't turn. The pins inside the cylinder could become stuck as they adapt to the shape of your key. This could cause your vehicle to not start. Alternatively, the cylinder may be shaky, but a tap with the small hammer from a tack can help to free it. Be careful not to mix up the springs and make sure your key is correctly placed.

Another indication that your cylinder is failing is when you need to turn the key and test it in various positions before it begins. This is a red flag and should be addressed immediately, as it can only get worse with time.

To examine the cylinder, you will need to remove the steering wheel cover and disconnect the battery. The old ignition switch should be simple to take off, as will the cylinder made of steel. If you don't own an extra switch, you may be able to bring your original ignition cylinder as well as switch to locksmiths for reuse so long as they're in good working order. After replacing the ignition switch and cylinder, ensure that you connect the wiring to secure it, then reattach all covers and panels that you took off.

4. Check the Spark Plugs

The spark plug is the final link in your ignition system chain. When it is damaged it will stop the engine from running. This can take the form of your car not running at all, or it may start but run poorly. In either of these scenarios, it's likely that one of several factors are hindering or blocking electrical current from crossing spark plug gaps, which then ignites the air and fuel mixture within your engine.

Be sure to wear gloves and protective tools before working with your spark plugs. Spark plugs are hot and can cause serious injury when touched with your naked skin.

There may be a slight gray or brown fleck on the tip of the electrode if the spark plug is damaged. The electrode may also have a dark layer. These deposits, or fouling, may prevent high-voltage electricity from jumping across the spark plug gap and sparking your engine.

If you suspect that your spark plugs may be the cause, you could test them by remove them from their tube inside the ignition coil. This can be done by disconnecting the coil from the plug wire and following the appropriate procedure for your car to remove the components that cover the spark plugs. Once you have removed the plugs you can place them on a surface that is grounded and turn the engine. If they're functioning you should see a bright blue spark near the edge of the central electrode.

The next step is to go through the ignition chain, testing each part until you can determine what is hindering the spark plugs from performing their job. All systems will wear out and eventually fail, and this is particularly applicable to ignition systems. However, regular maintenance can reduce the wear and tear and prevent a major headache at the worst possible time.FIAT.png
